Rare Q ship Cymric WW1 Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal P. O. Powell

For sale is a Royal Navy Long Service and Good conduct Medal G. Obverse heavily polished, reverse very good.

Medal comes with copies of his service records and medal roll. Petty Officer James George Powell. Was born in Newport, Telford in 1887. He was working as an errand boy when he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 1/3/1907. On the outbreak of the Great War, he was serving on H.

Hindustan (King Edward VII-class pre-dreadnought battleship) as an Able Seaman. He served on her from 19/07/1911 - 17/4/1916.

He was transferred to the newly commissioned H. Royal Sovereign (battleship) from 18/4/1916 - 7/2/1918 as a Leading Seaman. On 15/10/1918 the British Submarine J6 was on patrol off the Northumberland coast when she was spotted by the Cymric.

The Cymric's captain mistook the identity lettering on the conning tower of J6 for U6 and opened fire. The J6 tried to signal, but the signalman was killed and the J6 fled into a fog bank, unfortunately Cymric located J6 again and sank her. It was only after the survivors were seen in the water when the crew of Cymric realized their mistake and recovered the survivors. Of the crew of J6, only 15 out of the 34 on board survived. A subsequent court of enquiry found no action would be taken. An order under the Official Secrets Act prohibited mention of this incident until 1969. He continued to serve post war retiring to shore and a pension on 19/3/1927.
