Crimean War - Egypt 1882 CB medal group to Colonel Frederick Elton, Royal Artillery, who was awarded the French Legion of Honour when as a 17-year-old Lieutenant he led a'Forlorn Hope' at the Great Redan, to attempt to spike the Russian guns, later commanding the Royal Artillery at the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir during the Egypt campaign in 1882. Set includes: The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Military Division C.

, Companion's breast badge, in solid gold and enamel, hallmarks for London 1857; Crimea Medal (1854), 1 clasp SEBASTOPOL, period engraved named LIEUT F. Egypt Medal reverse dated 1882, 1 clasp, TEL-EL-KEBIR, period engraved LIEUT COL F. Legion of Honour, breast badge; Order of the Medjidie; Turkish Crimea medal (French issue) and Khedive's Star 1882.

Individually mounted on blue velvet backing and remnants of frame by Spink and Son. Comes with copies of Army Lists, newspaper articles, and research notes. Naval and Military Gazette 22/11/1882. Legion of Honour London Gazette 4/8/1856.

Was born at Swainshill, Herefordshire in 1837. He was a gentleman cadet at Woolwich commencing 18/11/1850, whilst he officially was commissioned as a lieutenant on 1/1/1855, his obituary states he was sent out to the Crimea in 1854 at 17 years of age, this making him one of the youngest (Army) officers in the campaign.

He volunteered to lead a'Forlorn Hope' to spike the Russian guns in the Great Redan, for which he was awarded the French Legion of Honour and'mentioned'. He continued to serve the rest of the campaign serving with No. 2 Company, 11th Battalion, Royal Artillery. Promoted captain in 1861, major in 1872 and lieutenant-colonel in 1881.

He was the commander of the 2nd Division Royal Artillery at the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir, being awarded the Order of the Bath (CB) and the Turkish Order of Medjidie, 3rd Class, as well as being'mentioned' (London Gazette 2/11/1882). He was promoted to colonel in 1885 and from 1887 - 1892 commanded the Royal Artillery, South-Eastern District at Dover Castle. He retired in 1894 after having served in all three branches of the Regiment being Horse Artillery, Field Artillery and Garrison Artillery.

He died on Christmas Day 1920 at the Hotel Burlington, Dover. Please view my other collector's items for sale.
