Egypt Medal To Pte John Bird Royal Marines Born Stowmarket Hms Jumna

John Bird was born in Stowmarket on 18 Mar 1853 and enlisted in Chatham Division RMLI a day after his 19th birthday. Purpose-built for transporting troops to and from India. John spent short periods in a number of other ships before being discharged, time served, in 1895, having transferred to the Portsmouth Div in 1893. The 1901 Census records him as a Maltman living at 35 Mote Road, Maidstone with his wife Rosa. He was still a Maltman in 1911 living at 55 St Peters Road, Maidstone.
