Having recovered John spent three years in HMS. The Harwich guardship during this period, before joining HMS. John spent short periods in a number of other ships before being discharged, time served, in 1895, having transferred to the Portsmouth Div in 1893. The 1901 Census records him as a Maltman living at 35 Mote Road, Maidstone with his wife Rosa. He was still a Maltman in 1911 living at 55 St Peters Road, Maidstone.
