EGYPT Royal Society of Geography 1960 cast iron Medal / Isma'il, Fuad & Farouk
Royal Society of Geography cast iron Medal. Issued 1950 for the Society's 75th anniversary (60mm, 87.64 g, 12h). By Tefiq Bichay in Cairo. SOC ROYALE DE GEOGRAPHIE, jugate busts facing slightly left of Isma'il, Fuad I, and Farouk I, each wearing a fez; below, AD and AH dates, as well as Arabic legend // ISMAIL FONDATEUR / FOUAD ANIMATEUR / FAROUK PROTECTEUR in three lines; Arabic legend in three lines above; ancient Egyptian figure seated left; outline of Egypt, with the Nile outlined, in background. Deep glossy charcoal gray surfaces, with just a few scattered spots- most notably near the face of the seated Egyptian figure.
A fairly rare and charming piece. The Society was founded as the Khedivial Society of Geography by Isma'il Pasha in May 1875. Over the years, it changed its name, here being called the Royal Society of Geography, owing to British influences. Its current name, the Egyptian Geographic Society, originated in 1952 following the Egyptian Revolution.
