Royal West Kent Regiment group to POW from Battle of Leros. 6341952 Ronald Gerald Thorne RICKETTS served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment during the inter-war period before being made a POW during the Battle of Leros in 1943. Born in 1912 in London, Ricketts enlisted in British Army sometime around 1937 and served during the Arab Revolt in late 1930s.
For this service he was awarded the General Service Medal with clasp'Palestine'. The 2nd Battalion of the Royal West Kents at outbreak of Second World War was sent to garrison Malta. Ricketts would have served throughout the famous siege of this Island.In 1943 the Brigade of which the 2nd Battalion belonged was sent to the Dodecanese where it was heavily committed during the Battle of Leros. Captured following this failed British Campaign, Ricketts (now a Lance-Corporal) was sent as a POW to Germany where he was held at Stalag XIA until released in 1945. Ronald Ricketts died on 20 July 1982 in Ascot, England.
