Japanese Medal Imperial Capital Rehabilitation Medal 1930. A VERY RARE, NOT SEEN VERY OFTEN MEDAL. With RARE original paper wrapper that protected these mint manufactured medals from oxidation.
Ssued in March 1930 to commemorate the reconstruction of Tokyo after the 1923 Kanto Earthquake. The Obverse Bears the Imperial Crest at the top, with an outline of the Marunouchi Business District in the centre and blossoms at the bottom. The Medal is of silver and the barrel connecting the medal to the ribbon bears the "M" imprint indicating it was produced at the Osaka Mint. The Reverse is inscribed "Imperial Capital Rehabilitation Commemorative Medal Showa 5 [1930] March". Original case is good except for a scuff mark on one edge. Ribbon: White with green edges and a narrow green central stripe. Awarded: To those who who had participated directly or had assisted in the rehabilitation of Tokyo after the disastrous earthquake of 1 September 1923 in which, partly as a result of ensuing firestorms, more than 100,000 Japanese lost their lives and Tokyo, the port of Yokohama and the surrounding area were devastated. The medal was mainly awarded as a symbol of gratitude from the Reconstruction Bureau to other government bodies and officials that assisted in carrying out the reconstruction. Awarded to all cabinet ministers during the reconstruction, members of Parliament, Mayors and other town officials and others who contributed. In the rear, vertically in the middle, the words Imperial Capital Reconstruction Commemorative Medal with the words 5th Year of Showa (1930) March on the bottom. Silver disc: 3 centimeters in diameter. Obverse side to feature a chrysanthemum crest at the top, at the center, representations of a cityscape and rays of a rising sun?? , with cherry blossoms below at the bottom. The new 100 meter wide road in the center of Tokyo. Added an arcade of trees to emphasize the perspective of the new wide streets.
