In Memory of the Reign of Emperor Alexander III. Established on February 26, 1896, by decree [2] of the Emperor of the Russian Empire Nicholas II in commemoration of the 51st anniversary of the birth of Emperor Alexander III, with the aim of rewarding officials who were in active civil service during his reign [3] [4].
Awarded to clergymen, church hierarchs, generals, headquarters and chief officers, class ranks of various departments. According to additional decrees [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11], women holding relevant public positions [3] [12] were also awarded.
Made of silver, diameter 28 mm. On the obverse of the medal there is a shoulder-length, right-facing profile image of Alexander III. On the right, in an arc along the edge, the inscription - IMP. ALEXANDER III , on the left - a laurel branch. On the reverse side of the medal with a large imperial crown, the years of the reign of Alexander III are indicated in two lines: " 1881 1894 ".An image of a cross [3] [13] is placed under the dates. The types of medals of the state mintage are unknown [1]. There are known variants of medals issued by private workshops. They may differ in image detail. There are also options made of white metal [4].
In addition, there are known tailcoat versions of the medal, with a diameter of approximately 10 to 16 mm [1] [14]. All in all, the St. Petersburg Mint produced about 300,000 medals (299,765) [3].
