James Addison was residing at 5 Prospect Terrace, Glasgow when he attested for the 3/1st Highland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery Territorial Force 20th June 1915 aged 22 years 3 months. Promoted acting Bombardier 28th March 1916, he reverted to Gunner 2nd April 1916 and was promoted again to Bombardier 4th November 1916. Appointed Corporal 30th June 1917, he reverted to Gunner 28th September 1917. Posted to the Baluchistan Field Force Ammunition Column 1st June 1919, he served in the Third Afghan War, demobilised 22nd December 1919.
Serving in India 28th September 1917 to 30th October 1919. In June 1922 he was serving with the Royal Air Force at RAF Hawkings, Kent as an Acting Sergeant when he claimed the Victory Medal (only entitled BWM for service in India). Promoted Flight Lieutenant 1st July 1943 (London Gazette 5th November 1943 page 4861), he relinquished his commission on account of ill health retaining the rank of Squadron Leader 2nd February 1944 (London Gazette 15th February 1944 page 782).
