McCarthy attested into the Royal Dublin Fusiliers and served in South Africa with the 2nd Battalion during the Boer War. He received a Gun Shot Wound to his back on 23 February 1900, during the action at Hart's Hill, Tugela Heights. He is additionally entitled to a two clasp King's South Africa Medal.
