The Life Guards Grenadier Regiment was formed in 1756. It repeatedly distinguished itself by its military discipline and bravery. Thus, in the Seven Years' War in 1759, at the Battle of Kunersdorf, the brave attack of the regiment (which was then called the 1st Grenadier) decided the outcome of the battle, and in 1760 the regiment was the first to occupy the outskirts of Berlin after a bloody assault.
The regiment also distinguished itself in the Russo-Turkish wars. It is no coincidence that the first Knight of the Order of St. George the Victorious was the regiment's officer, Lieutenant Colonel F.Fabrician, who received the high 3rd degree of the order for the capture of the city of Galati on November 15, 1769. Ozerov, under whose command the regiment made a decisive contribution to the victory at Kagul on July 21, 1770, and the battalion commander, Colonel Count S. Vorontsov (who later became a famous diplomat), became Cavaliers of St.
George of the 3rd degree. During the Napoleonic Wars, the Life Grenadiers took part in many battles and entered Paris as part of the Russian army. The regiment commander, Colonel Yu. Lyubovitsky, especially distinguished himself by not leaving the ranks despite being wounded twice and giving the signal to attack, taking the drum from a dead signalman. The regiment was located in the Petrovsky Barracks, built in 1811 according to the design of Luigi Rusca on Bolshaya Nevka.
On the second floor in the southern part of the officers' quarters there was a regimental church dedicated to the martyr Sebastian. Five years later it was named in honor of the holy martyr Artemon of Laodicea and the Venerable Maximus the Preacher ; on the day of their memory (April 13, old style) in 1813 the regiment became a guards regiment [1] [2].
