The medal was designed by Gordon Summers (Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint) who looked to honour the development and advances in minting techniques since the 1800's. The reverse depicts traditional hand skills showing a Charles II portrait punch representing the traditional way of creating hammered coins. The obverse focuses on the striking of modern coinage, how we today have harnessed technology highlighting the differences from then to now.
