WITH SERVICE HISTORY SHOWING JOSEPH DOUGLAS WILKINS WAS BORN IN NEWPORT, MONMOUTHSHIRE IN 1908. HE JOINED THE ROYAL NAVY IN 1925 AS A BOY SEAMAN. HE SERVED HIS 12 YEAR ENGAGEMENT ON SHIPS INCLUDING IRON DUKE, BARHAM, CLEMATIS, LUPIN, EREBUS, QUEEN ELIZABETH, LEANDER, ADVENTURE AND ENTERPRISE. JOINING THE RFR IN 1938. HE WAS MOBILISED IN 1939 AND JOINED THE DESTROYER HMS BASILISK ON 26/8/1939. ON 1/6/1940 BASILISK CAME UNDER HEAVY AIR ATTACK AND WAS BADLY DAMAGED, SUFFERING MANY CASUALTIES. AFTER AN ATTEMPTED TOWING AND MORE BOMBING, THE WRECK WAS EVENTUALLY SUNK BY GUNFIRE. 131 SURVIVOURS WERE RESCUED BY A BELGIAN TRAWLER. AFTER THIS WILKINS JOINED THE ARMED MERCHANT HMS CHESHIRE, AND WAS LATER ON THE BOOKS OF HMS AFRIKANDER (SIMONSTOWN, SOUTH AFRICA), HMS MALAGAS (RNAS WINGFIELD) AND HMS OWL (RNAS FEARN).BEFORE BEING RELEASED IN 1945. HIS RFR MEDAL WAS AWARDED IN 1941 AND THE NGS IN 1945.
