The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) played a distinguished and costly role during the First World War. Expanding to 25 battalions, the regiment served across multiple theatres, most notably on the Western Front, but also in Mesopotamia and Palestine. As a core component of the 51st (Highland) Division, the Black Watch took part in some of the war's fiercest fighting, including the early battles at Ypres in 1914 and later major offensives on the Somme and at Arras.
Renowned for their discipline and courage, the regiment suffered more than 8,000 fatalities, a testament to both the scale of their commitment and the severity of the fighting they endured.
