About the 40th Infantry Regiment. The 40th Infantry Regiment was formed in Kumamoto during the Meiji era and belonged to the 12th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army.
It participated in major conflicts such as. The Manchurian Incident (1931-33), deployed to northeast China for security and railway protection operations. Later mobilized again during the Second Sino-Japanese War (from 1937). As part of the Kumamoto Division, the regiment mainly consisted of soldiers from Kyushu and was among the earliest units dispatched to Manchuria.
