This badge was awarded only to soldiers and officers who participated in the 1932 Imperial Army's largest-ever field maneuvers, held jointly in Osaka and Kyoto. These "Grand Maneuvers" were the most important military exercises in prewar Japan, involving tens of thousands of troops from multiple divisions, as well as tanks, artillery, and aircraft. Most importantly, the maneuvers were personally inspected by the Emperor himself - a huge event for both the military and the public. Era: 1932 was a turning point: Japan had just invaded Manchuria (Manchurian Incident, 1931), marking the start of military expansion in Asia.
Purpose: These exercises were not just about training. They served to showcase Japan's military power to the world, to strengthen loyalty among the troops, and to send a political message both inside and outside the country. Scale: Troops from the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 16th Divisions gathered in the Kansai region, along with the latest equipment of the day (tanks, artillery, and early warplanes). Symbolism: The Emperor's personal review ("Gyo-tokan") was the highest military honor, and receiving this medal meant you were truly part of living Japanese military history. Material: White metal (nickel-silver alloy).Event-specific medals with the Emperor's personal inspection are among the most collectible Imperial Japanese Army items. This is a "named" piece of history from the pivotal pre-WWII years, and a tangible connection to Japan's military past. Perfect for collectors, historians, or anyone fascinated by the untold stories behind the objects.
