This is a WWII-era Imperial Japanese commemorative medal issued in 1935 (Showa 10) to mark the 600th anniversary of Kusunoki Masashige, a legendary samurai known for his loyalty to Emperor Go-Daigo and his sacrifice at the Battle of Minatogawa (1336). Features a samurai on horseback, wielding a sword. (Dai Nanko 600-nen Sai Kinen). "600th Anniversary of Kusunoki Masashige".
Shows a battlefield scene with banners and a memorial monument. The inscription at the bottom reads. "Made by the Mint Bureau". During the 1930s, the Imperial Japanese Army promoted samurai values and bushido (the way of the warrior) to instill a sense of national pride and loyalty. Kusunoki Masashige was revered as an ideal warrior who remained loyal to the Emperor, even at the cost of his life.
This medal was issued as part of the 600th Anniversary Festival, a government-backed event to strengthen nationalistic sentiment before the war.
